History of Drumlish Mill

Drumlish Mill dates from at least 1854, but may be considerably older. Standing in its present location for the last 200 years, an earlier Drumlish mill may have stood on the site of the nearby dwelling house. 

Drumlish Mill was a traditional water-powered corn mill. It had an overshot wheel powered by a mill stream running above the level of the wheel (whereas an undershot wheel had the water impact the wheel’s paddles at a point below the level of the wheel’s shaft). The two-storey building beside the mill is the kiln where the corn was dried.

This mill was one of almost 100 that have been identified throughout County Longford in a recent study. Many more have either disappeared from the landscape or are in various stages of disrepair.

Drumlish Mill was restored in the 1990s and is an important reminder of what was once a major element of the landscape and economy of rural Ireland.

Drumlish Mill is in private ownership and not ordinarily accessible to the public at present. However, you can view Drumlish Mill on your right-hand side when leaving Drumlish in the direction of Arva.
