Longford Town Courthouse

In its current form, it dates from the early 1790s. However, as far back as 1737, there are references to a courthouse that may have been on part of the same site.

It was expanded in the early 1790s and then renovated from 1859-61. This renovation includes the addition of the top storey.

A working courthouse, it was also the meeting place of the Co. Longford Grand Jury. This organisation acted as a local authority with responsibility for roads, bridges and some public buildings until 1899.

The building also housed other groups and was the place for other activities in the town. In 1824, there is a reference to the Longford Bible Society meeting here. In 1851, the Theatre Royal opened in the building.

For many years after 1899, the building also had the offices of Longford County Council and Longford Town Council, acting as a town hall.

In 2006, the courthouse reopened after extensive refurbishment.
