The Killian Homeplace Family History Centre

The Killian Homeplace Family History Centre is proud to announce that it has been officially designated as the new home of the Irish Family History Foundation for County Longford. The Longford Roots databases include church records of baptisms, marriages, deaths, many civil records, census returns and gravestone inscriptions. New records are being added every month, as digitization of our archives continues.

This comprehensive service enables people from any part of the world to trace their County Longford roots. Each enquiry is individually assessed by one of our team of experienced researchers, who have in-depth knowledge of the county and the sources for each parish. The members of our research team are dedicated to ensuring that individuals searching for their Longford roots will fill in their family tree and find their way home to County Longford.

Background

The Killian Homeplace Family History Centre was launched on 19 March 2023, exactly 25 years to the day after buying the first half of the farm at auction in Longford. The mission of this initiative is to give the opportunity to the global diaspora, particularly those connected to the University of Notre Dame, to find their own place of origin through genealogical research and local County Longford resources. The Killian Homeplace Family History Centre will serve as a gathering place where family stories can be recorded and preserved for future generations. The Killian Homeplace Family History Centre is a sustainable tribute to the memory of all who have gone before us, restored in honour of Anne Furey Killian, who against all odds, purchased the farm from the Land Commission in 1893. She was 82 years old and had been widowed for over 30 years.

The Killian Homeplace cottage was where Joan's great-great grandfather, Luke Killian, was born in 1799. Joan first saw the long abandoned and derelict property in 1977. Later she had an opportunity to purchase the three cottages and 60 acres of farmland. She spent 13 years painstakingly restoring the cottages, an act of love and a tribute to the legacy of the Killian family.

The 2023 Longford Rose Grace Kemple is a descendant of the Killians in Fermoyle, near Lanesborough in County Longford. The 2023 Rose Tour visited Longford, highlighting the county on the international tourism map with so many families with Irish ancestry tuned in. Irish-American, Joan Killian Gallagher refurbished the old Killian homestead and has now established a genealogy centre there offering a wonderful opportunity for international visitors to trace their Irish Ancestry here in County Longford.
