South Longford Cycling Routes
The South Longford Cycling routes are beautiful cycling trails through scenic South Longford, consisting of four different routes (A1, A2, A3 and A4). Taking in stunning views of the Royal Canal, River Shannon, Barley Harbour and much more. There is a map and information board in each village along the route.
A1 Great family cycle of 32km following the Royal Canal for most of the route. Care should be taken crossing the R398. Clipping in and out of pedals can prove awkward at canal bridges and gates. Soft surfaces on the canal can be difficult for some road bikes. Facilities at Clondra and Keenagh villages. Rating: Moderate
Route A1 ↓
A2 is a 31km cycle loop commencing in Keenagh via Barry following small country roads. It includes interesting bog views and an opportunity to visit Corlea Trackway Visitors Centre, home to an Iron Age bog road. Keenagh village offers the only access to refreshments and toilet facilities. Rating: Moderate
Route A2 ↓
A3 is the shortest route in South Longford at 29km and brings you along the Royal Canal. Highlights of the route include the beautiful village of Abbeyshrule (a National Tidy Towns winner). Pallas is the birthplace of poet Oliver Goldsmith. Stop off at Newcastle Woods on the banks of the River Inny. Finish your route off in Ballymahon, and enjoy some refreshments in the cafes, restaurants or bars. Care should be taken when crossing the R392 at Newcastle Woods. Facilities at Abbeyshrule and Ballymahon Town. Rating: Moderate
Route A3 ↓
A4 is the longest cycle trail in South Longford at 36km. It features beautiful views of Lough Ree and its islands, with opportunities to visit Barley Harbour, Saints Island and Rathcline Castle along the way. The picturesque towns of Lanesborough and Newtowncashel offer plenty of facilities including restaurants, cafes, playground and walking trails. Rating: Moderate
