About this Route

The South Longford Cycling Trail (Route A4) takes you to the heart of south County Longford along the shores of Lough Ree. This is a moderate cycling route on very flat country roads and lanes. The cycle could be completed in 2 hours but it is worth spending a little more time to stop and appreciate the sights.

The route takes starts and finishes in Lanesborough, although you can start and end this circular route at any point. There is only one village along the route – Newtowncashel, a national Tidy Town winner – so you should have. Route signage along the way makes navigating very easy.

The route takes you close to the eastern shores of Lough Ree. The lake itself is just a short cycle from the marked trail. Convenient points to access the lake are at Barley Harbour and Elfeet Bay. Saint’s Island is a useful side trek – it is approximately 4km off the marked route .

Other nearby points of interest include Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre, Casey BogOak Studios, and the ISPA Centre.
